The most memorable weddings, in my opinion, showcase the couple and their unique personalities, both as a couple and as individuals. I truly think that getting to know who someone really is and what they like is the secret to flower-making. By getting to know our couples, I can more effectively tell their story. Although understanding and capturing one’s personality and uniqueness can take time and effort on the part of floral designers, it’s worth it to me. 

The Initial Consultation

One thing that I always do prior to an initial consultation is look through a couple’s Pinterest board and pins. This gives me an idea of what their vibes are. It is especially helpful if they have pinned different weddings that have resonated with them. I also focus on really having a conversation with them. During the consultation, I not only talk about their wedding dreams, but also talk about their lives and their love stories because each love story is unique. Ultimately, my goal is to bring this unique aspect to life through floral designs. 

An Example of Knowing Your Couple and Wedding Flower Making

One example of this happened with my recent consultation with a couple. I was immediately struck by how vibrant and dynamic the bride’s personality was. She emanated boldness and glamour, and it was important for her to have flowers that reflected her personality. At the same time, her groom-to-be was significantly more subdued — counterbalancing her dynamic energy. I immediately noticed his warm, calming smile and how reassured it made the bride feel. 

Together, they created a beautiful energy, and I wanted the floral design to reflect both of them. As a result, it took a while for me to puzzle through my floral design. In the end, I chose bold burgundy dahlia with other accent flowers that played off of their fall foliage theme, including delicate garden roses.
