One of the biggest complaints I hear from couples planning their weddings is that vendors rarely offer transparent pricing. The first few times I heard this comment, I was so perplexed that I didn’t even ask them what they meant. 

As the comments kept cropping up, I finally started asking these couples what they meant. Most of them said they were frustrated that vendors hadn’t listed their prices on their websites. 

Is Wedding Vendor Pricing Opaque? 

I understand the concerns that these couples continued to voice. Weddings are stressful, big-ticket items, and no one wants to run out of money when planning their special day. However, I also understand that we live in a world where most companies openly advertise their price. Click on a picture of a sweater or a pair of shoes you like, and you will immediately know how much these items will set you back. 

But, this comparison is not apples to apples. Unlike the examples mentioned above, wedding vendors are not selling a product. Instead, they are selling an experiential service, and there is no one-size-fits-all (or even most) price for these services. 

How Do you Price Services? 

Pricing services is not an exact science. In fact, in many ways, I would describe it as an art form that takes into account each couple’s unique needs and wedding vision. For example, floral design for a 100-person wedding where the ceremony and reception are at the same venue will likely be priced dramatically different than a 300-guest wedding where both a church and a reception venue are being formally draped and decorated. 

Even weddings that have similar numbers of guests may have different price points for their beautiful flower designs. For example, it may be possible to locally source many beautiful flower choices at an attractive price point in the summer. But, on the other hand, if someone is looking for exotic or tropical flowers out-of-season, the price for this service could skyrocket.
