As a floral designer, everyone expects that I will quickly be able to rattle off what my favorite flowers are, both around my home and at weddings. The truth is that the answer to this question is hard, and it depends on factors like what season of the year we are in, certain flowers are truly spectacular at certain times, and my mood. Sometimes delicate pastels speak to me, and other times I love big, bold flowers and colors.
However, the much easier question for me to answer is what flowers I don’t love. Even though I have seen many floral designers create spectacular bouquets with carnations and baby breath, I just do not enjoy working with these two flowers. Oh, and sunflowers too. I have seen some gorgeous ethereal sunflower creations on Pinterest, but the reality of sunflowers never works that way for me. These three flowers simply do not speak to my heart or aesthetics. Even given the huge variety of flowers available, I think we should always seek out those that speak to us. You can check out the flowers I do enjoy working with on Instagram!
Part of being a great floral designer is not just about using the flowers that speak to me. It is also about listening to my clients and their visions for their special day and then finding flowers that speak to them. I also regularly remind people that the same flower can look dramatically different in a different color palette or at another point in its lifecycle. For example, an unfurled yellow rose creates a very different floral portrait than a tight pastel pink rosebud.

Ching & I first worked together on one of our clients’ weddings & she did an incredible job! From her communication to her absolutely stunning florals! Afterwards she reached out to me to do a styled shoot together! She worked on getting fabulous new local wedding vendors to our venue, The Roostertail. Organizing a styled shoot takes more than most people realize but she handled everything in a professional and friendly manner! Since then I have personally reached out to her paper invitation company for two different projects!"
