When it comes to timeless wedding style, few color palettes are as iconic as black and white. Emily and James chose the Shinola Hotel’s Birdy Room in Detroit as the perfect backdrop for their intimate early spring wedding, and the result was nothing short of breathtaking. With its vaulted glass ceilings and modern architecture, the Birdy Room created an airy yet sophisticated atmosphere that set the tone for the day.

The couple embraced the classic black and white wedding theme with a fresh twist. Black linens and bridesmaid dresses created a dramatic contrast, while delicate white florals softened the look with elegance. I used roses and early spring white tulips to highlight the season’s beauty, crafting lush arrangements that felt both refined and romantic.

One of my favorite aspects of this wedding was the transformation of the space. After a heartfelt ceremony beneath the soaring glass ceilings, the room was flipped into a cozy dinner reception. Candlelight illuminated the tables, reflecting off the black linens and glass windows to create an intimate glow that perfectly matched the couple’s vision for a warm, celebratory evening.

To tie everything together, I created a custom venue illustration of the Shinola Hotel. Incorporating the illustration into the wedding design added a personal, cohesive touch—making the stationery and décor truly one-of-a-kind. It’s details like these that elevate a wedding from beautiful to unforgettable, and Emily and James loved how it captured the essence of their venue.

This wedding was proof that black and white never goes out of style—it simply evolves. With thoughtful details like tulips for spring, candlelit warmth for intimacy, and custom artwork for personality, this Shinola celebration felt both classic and modern at once.
